"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.'" - Jeremiah 29:11-13
Twenty-one years ago, my wife, daughter, and I came to this church where I was recently employed. My daughter attended Sunday school and was part of the children's choir. It was a great time for the three of us.
Since it was a whole new day for us, we decided to celebrate by sponsoring a Walk of Faith stone on campus. The verse we chose was "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland" (Isaiah 43:18-19)."
As I walk by the stepping stone every day on the way to my office, I look at that verse and remember those wonderful moments and those special times. So, what I'm doing every time I look at that verse, is to think about the past! But, what God is encouraging us to do in this incredible message is not to forgo happy reminiscing, but to not worry about past wrongs or traumas.
God doesn't want us to live in the negative parts of our pasts. He wants us to live in the present because the present is a wonderful gift to us and it is full of all the promises that God has for us each new day.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for this lovely reminder to anticipate with joyful expectation the new things you have for me - in this moment and the coming days and years. Thank you for making a way for me as I journey with you into the positive possibilities of life. Amen.
Reflection: How does your life improve whenever you wake up and thank the Lord for each new day?
